From World cups and TV debuts to electric shocks, as 2019 comes to an end we look back on what the Bromley Belles have achieved over the last twelve months.
The New Year saw an increase in women joining the Belles looking to try a new team sport. We also welcomed our new coach who has helped us to improve our understanding of the game.
At the beginning of the year we took part in three tournaments including finishing runner up in a Surrey FA festival and as debutants we made the semi finals of our local FA people’s cup section. Into the summer, other tournaments included playing at Crawley Town in our first 11 a side tournament of the year and playing in the Bromley women’s festival to celebrate England’s participation in the women’s World Cup.
Our proudest moment though was representing the Bromley Belles at the inaugural ‘Old Girls’ World Cup in France. Nearly 20 Belles played in a celebration of women’s recreational football. Several players including Sue, Yrais, Elizabeth and Bridget made their international debuts with over 200 women from across the world taking part. The experience was a memorable one and gave us our TV debut on the BBC where we shared how we as the missed generation finally had a chance to play football on an international stage.
The Belles have not only been busy on the football pitch. In September twenty of the team took part in Tough Mudder. The ultimate challenge involves running ten miles and conquering 25 obstacles including the infamous arctic enema, crawling under barbed wire and running through the electric shock therapy! After over 4 hours, we crossed the finishing line together. Amazingly the team also raised over £4,000 for a number of different charities, which was a phenomenal achievement.
Our fundraising hasn’t stopped there – we also now sponsor two goats, Gerry and Andy at Foal farm who work tirelessly to support unhomed animals.
The year ended with us rightly celebrating our achievements with one of our many social events. We are all looking forward to 2020 with our first tournament of the year again on New Year’s Day.
We would like to thank Bromley FC for their continued support in raising the profile of women’s recreational football as well as our sponsors Ronin Marketing and Bromley Property Company.
